The Depth Irreducibility Hypothesis
نویسنده
چکیده
We propose the following computational assumption: in general if we try to compress the depth of a circuit family (parallel time) more than a constant factor we will suffer super-quasipolynomial blowup in the size (number of processors). This assumption is only slightly stronger than the popular assumption about the robustness of NC, and we observe that it has surprising consequences. Note also that the choice of super-quasi-polynomial blowup is the smallest bound that avoids the circuit class collapse of [Vol98]. In this proposal we put our assumption in perspective, discuss its relation to the existing literature, and show that it has two important consequences. The first consequence is NC 6= SC, where NC is the class characterized by uniform circuits of poly-logarithmic depth and polynomial size, and SC is characterized by algorithms that run in poly-logarithmic space and polynomial time. For the second consequence we use an additional but mild complexity assumption to obtain a strong separation between the graph isomorphism GraphIso and the group isomorphism GroupIso problem. In particular, we show that GraphIso is not reducible to GroupIso using circuits of O(log n) depth.

Irreducibility of the tensor product of Albeverio's representations of the Braid groups $B_3$ and $B_4$
We consider Albeverio's linear representations of the braid groups $B_3$ and $B_4$. We specialize the indeterminates used in defining these representations to non zero complex numbers. We then consider the tensor products of the representations of $B_3$ and the tensor products of those of $B_4$. We then determine necessary and sufficient conditions that guarantee the irreducibility of th...
متن کاملOn the irreducibility of the complex specialization of the representation of the Hecke algebra of the complex reflection group $G_7$
We consider a 2-dimensional representation of the Hecke algebra $H(G_7, u)$, where $G_7$ is the complex reflection group and $u$ is the set of indeterminates $u = (x_1,x_2,y_1,y_2,y_3,z_1,z_2,z_3)$. After specializing the indetrminates to non zero complex numbers, we then determine a necessary and sufficient condition that guarantees the irreducibility of the complex specialization of the repre...

The aim of this paper is the study of a covering of a max-mingeneral fuzzy automaton by another, admissible relations, admissiblepartitions of a max-min general fuzzy automaton,$tilde{delta}$-orthogonality of admissible partitions, irreduciblemax-min general fuzzy automata. Then we obtain the relationshipsbetween them.
متن کاملFast Parallel Absolute Irreducibility Testing
We present a fast parallel deterministic algorithm for testing multivariate integral polynomials for absolute irreducibility, that is irreducibility over the complex numbers. More precisely, we establish that the set of absolutely irreducible integral polynomials belongs to the complexity class NC of Boolean circuits of polynomial size and logarithmic depth. Therefore it also belongs to the cla...
متن کاملComplexity Science for Simpletons
In this article, we shall describe some of the most interesting topics in the subject of Complexity Science for a general audience. Anyone with a solid foundation in high school mathematics (with some calculus) and an elementary understanding of computer programming will be able to follow this article. First, we shall explain the significance of the P versus NP problem and solve it. Next, we sh...
